Topic

Christian Courage

Courage is not one of the fruits of the Spirit. It is not one of the three chief virtues in the New Testament (see, for instance, 1 Thessalonians 1:3). Paul wrote a hymn about love (1 Corinthians 13), but no hymn about courage. Jesus said the meek would be blessed, but he didn’t mention any blessing for the courageous.

Christian women are encouraged to be submissive, and to cultivate a gentle and quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:4-5). Peter doesn’t specifically mention that women should be courageous.

So, why should the women of our presbytery spend a whole day learning about Christian courage? Because all Christians, and therefore all Christian women, are called to worship in an idolatrous world, to witness in a hostile world, and to serve in a dangerous world. Because all Christian women are called to exercise faith, hope, and love, which look a lot like courage out in real life. Because all Christian women are engaged in spiritual warfare against terrible enemies, armed only with God’s word, Christ’s sacraments, and prayer. Because all Christian women are disciples of a courageous master.

One final reason: because, to slightly paraphrase Daniel 11:32, “the women who know their God will stand firm and take action.”
